Best Spots For Live Music

If you’ve ever stayed with us at the Blacksmith Inn on the Shore, you already know that Door County doesn’t just look beautiful, it sounds beautiful too. The county is alight with great spots to seek out concerts, performances, shows, hootenannys; whatever you want to call them, there is no shortage, regardless of season. No matter the venue, there’s a particular joy to the experience of live music, a timbre and feel that the crowd and space lend that a recording just can’t impart, and here in our little corner of Wisconsin, the peninsula itself lends its own flavor to the mix.

Guests ask me all the time: “Where should we go for live music?”

Well, pull up a chair, because I’ve got more than a few favorites.

door community auditorium concert

Door Community Auditorium

The crown jewel of the county’s performing arts spaces, the DCA hosts artists big and small all year round. This beautiful, multilevel auditorium in Fish Creek brings in big national acts and small regional performers alike, with names like Johnny Cash, Billy Strings, and Mavis Staples adorning past marquees. Grab a program, settle in, and let the music take you away.

peg egan concert

Peg Egan Performing Arts Center

Nestled on a hillside overlooking the water of Egg Harbor, this beautiful, grassy outdoor venue is a local favorite. The sunset performs in tandem with whoever happens to be on the stage on a given night, lending each performance a light show that can’t be replicated anywhere else. Take a blanket, pick up some picnic supplies on your way there, and bliss out while surrounded by drifting music and fireflies.

birch creek concert

Birch Creek Music Performance Center

An elite music academy secreted away in the heart of Door County, Birch Creek puts on performances in a historic barn that feels equal parts refined and rustic. World class instrumentalists, both students and instructors alike, play in ensembles throughout the summer. You’ll hear everything from symphony to jazz performed by nationally recognized musicians alongside rising talent.

White Gull Inn

This one is a bit of a local secret, but I don’t mind letting you in on it. The historic White Gull Inn in Fish Creek puts on a concert series every winter, tending towards the folk side of things. The venue is intimate, a cleared dining room with antique chairs ringed around a fireplace. The music is sublime, resonant and warm. The experience is pure Door County, and should not be missed.

Any Old Town

Yes, you read that right. Just about every village, town, and city on the peninsula hosts its own concert series each summer, often in a lakeside park. Pick up some takeout and head to whichever town you fancy, park, and just follow the music.

This is by no means a complete list. What I love most about music in Door County is that it isn’t confined to one stage or one style. On any given night, you might find a symphony in a barn, a folk singer in a dining room, or a rock band playing under the stars.

Truth is, the “best” spot depends on the evening and your mood.

So here’s my advice: don’t over-plan it. Let the day unfold. Ask around. Follow the sound of music drifting on the breeze.

And when you come back to the inn, maybe a little later than expected, I’ll be here, happy to hear where the night took you.
